Inside the First Issue of Digital Trust Digest

PQC

Quantum computing has moved from theory to inevitability. And the cryptographic systems we rely on today — like RSA, ECC, EdDSA — are running out of time.

That’s why we created Digital Trust Digest, a new magazine from Keyfactor focused on the challenges and priorities that security professionals care about most. In each issue, we combine expert analysis with insights from global surveys of cybersecurity leaders to pinpoint where the industry stands today and where we need to go next.

Our first issue explores a topic that’s already reshaping conversations in boardrooms, SOCs, and audit committees: post-quantum cryptography (PQC).

Why This Issue, Why Now

While post-quantum cryptography may sound futuristic, the need to prepare is immediate. Cryptographically relevant quantum computers could arrive within a decade — some predict by 2029. When they do, they’ll be capable of breaking widely used encryption, threatening the confidentiality of today’s most sensitive data.

Government mandates are already here. NIST has finalized PQC algorithms and set clear timelines. The EU’s Coordinated Roadmap calls for high-risk systems to be upgraded by 2030. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, NCSC, and ASD in Australia have also issued guidance.

And yet, according to our new survey of 450 security professionals across North America and Europe, many organizations are dangerously underprepared.

What the Data Tells Us

The findings in this issue of Digital Trust Digest reveal a clear and concerning pattern:

  • 48% of organizations say they are not prepared for PQC.

  • Only 28% have both budget and personnel committed to readiness efforts.

  • 57% are waiting — for regulators, peer action, or a sense of urgency that may come too late.

  • And while 92% claim visibility into their cryptographic assets, only 47% actively monitor them.

This isn’t just a gap in readiness. It’s a gap in strategy, governance, and visibility — and the clock is ticking.

What You’ll Find Inside the Magazine

This edition of Digital Trust Digest goes beyond surface-level stats. It features nine original articles written by Keyfactor leaders — seasoned experts in cryptography, PKI, identity, and risk — who break down where organizations are stuck, and how to move forward.

Here are just a few of the must-read pieces:

“Too Soon to Act?” by Chris Hickman, CSO
Chris tackles the most persistent myth around PQC: that we still have time. He walks through six of the most common excuses for inaction — from “we’re waiting for standards” to “we don’t have resources” — and explains why each one puts your organization at greater risk.

“Delaying doesn’t buy you clarity. It buys you exposure.”

“Who Owns PQC?” by Admir Abdurahmanovic, SVP of Strategy
Admir explores why PQC isn’t just a technical problem; it’s a governance problem. He outlines the structural issues that prevent progress: unclear ownership, lack of cross-functional coordination, and no executive sponsorship.

“You cannot be agile if you don’t know who owns what.”

“The Great Cryptographic Inventory” by Vladimir Soukharev, Head of Cryptographic Research and Development
Vladimir explains why inventory — not implementation — is the true first step in quantum readiness. Without visibility into where cryptographic assets live and how they’re managed, even well-funded migration efforts will fall short.

“Inventory is like turning on the lights in a warehouse before you reorganize it. It’s not flashy — but it’s foundational.”

“The Budget Bottleneck” by Eric Mizell, Field CTO
Eric highlights the resource reality: 32% of organizations have staff but no budget, and another 29% have budget but no people. He shares practical tips to frame PQC in business terms and make the case to executives.

“You can’t secure what you don’t fund.”

“Playing Offense, Not Just Defense” by Jordan Rackie, CEO
Jordan makes the case that PQC isn’t just a defensive move; it’s a business opportunity. Early adopters aren’t just protecting data; they’re building trust, winning customers, and gaining a competitive edge.

“Trust is tomorrow’s currency. And PQC is how you earn it.”

Read It, Share It, Use It

Whether you’re a PKI admin mapping out your inventory, a CISO making the case for budget, or an executive looking to lead with resilience, this issue of Digital Trust Digest offers something for you. It’s packed with:

  • Real-world survey data
  • Expert perspectives
  • Actionable steps to start or accelerate your PQC readiness

This isn’t just a report. It’s a resource. And it’s only the beginning. Future issues of the magazine will dive into topics like automation, cryptographic risk management, and more.
