Quantum Countdown: Steps to Protect Your Business from Emerging Threats

Industry Trends

As we dive into 2025, the urgency to secure sensitive data has never been greater.

The clock is ticking – experts predict RSA encryption could be cracked as early as 2028. Combine that with the growing threat of “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, and it’s clear that preparing for the post-quantum era isn’t just a priority – it’s a necessity.

While much remains in flux in Washington, the new Executive Order 14144 released on January 17 highlights the pressing need for post-quantum cryptography (PQC), stronger cryptographic key protections, and updated FedRAMP requirements to enhance security practices across industries.

For businesses, aligning with these evolving standards is critical. At Keyfactor, we’re committed to helping you stay ahead of these challenges and embrace PQC todaynot tomorrow.

I’d personally like to invite you to join us at Keyfactor Tech Days this March in Miami Beach. I’ll be kicking off the event by discussing security in the digital age. We’ve curated an incredible lineup of sessions on digital trust, PKI, and certificate automation, plus hands-on workshops centered on PQC and quantum-safe strategies.

Even if you can’t attend in person, I want to equip you with a few fresh ideas to safeguard your organization against emerging threats.

A Few Steps to Stay Ahead

Step 1: Understand Your Risk Exposure

Quantum threats aren’t a distant problem – they’re happening now. Every industry, from government and finance to healthcare and manufacturing, will feel the impact. Preparing for this shift isn’t just about technology; it’s about rethinking the way businesses operate.

At Keyfactor Tech Days, our “PQC is Here: Now What?” session will bring together some of the top minds in quantum readiness: Jaime Gomez-Garcia of Santander Bank, Russ Housley of Vigil Security LLC, Ryan Thomas of Lightship Security, and Victor Mateu of the Cryptography Research Center, Technology Innovation Institute. This session will offer actionable ways to navigate the challenges of a quantum-powered world.

💡 My advice: Don’t wait for quantum threats to become a front-page problem. Forward-thinking organizations are already implementing solutions to protect today’s systems while preparing for the future.

Step 2: Build Your Quantum-Safe Migration Plan

This isn’t a “flip the switch” situation – it’s a process. Moving to quantum-safe cryptography requires thoughtful planning. Hybrid certificates are a great starting point. They allow you to introduce quantum-safe algorithms while maintaining compatibility with existing systems.

At Keyfactor Tech Days, we’ll explore this in depth during our “PQC & Crypto Agility” workshop. Tomas Gustavsson, our Chief PKI Officer, and Sven Rajala, Senior Solutions Engineer, will cover:

  • Why hybrid cryptography works.
  • Standards for hybrid PKI and what they mean for your organization.
  • Migration paths tailored to different needs.

According to Tomas, “Hybrid certificates give organizations a way to secure their operations today and prepare for what’s coming tomorrow.”

💡 My advice: Start now. The sooner you plan your migration, the better positioned you’ll be to lead in a quantum-safe world.

Step 3: Collaborate and Keep Learning

Tackling quantum challenges requires collective effort. Collaboration across industries and public-private partnerships is essential for building scalable, secure solutions.

Our “It Takes a Village” session will highlight this collaborative spirit with insights from Ray Harishankar of IBM, Blair Canavan of Thales, Vladimir Soukharev of InfoSec Global, and our very own CTO, Ted Shorter. Together, they’ll explore:

  • Cross-industry efforts for PQC readiness.
  • Balancing security and operational efficiency.
  • Establishing standards for the future.

I’m eager to learn how their teams are developing long-term solutions at IBM, Thales, and InfoSec Global. It’s going to be a great session!

💡 My advice: Stay engaged with industry discussions and partner with organizations committed to advancing PQC standards. When it comes to post-quantum threats, waiting isn’t an option.

Whether you join us in Miami Beach or explore PQC resources online, it’s important to get involved:

  • PQC Lab: Explore our guides, videos, and tools, including how to set up your own post-quantum PKI lab in minutes.

By assessing your risks, planning your migration, and collaborating with industry leaders, you can future-proof your organization and stay ahead of emerging threats. Let’s secure the future together!
